Do Not Be Greenwashed

Ingredient reading is essential

Let's be real, most of us are using something toxic.

All items linked in this post are alternatives to conventional items/cleaners.

What is Greenwashing?

Business News Daily - "Greenwashing is when a company or organization spends more time and money on marketing themselves as environmentally friendly than on minimizing their environmental impact. It is a deceitful advertising gimmick intended to mislead consumers who prefer to buy goods and services from environmentally conscious brands."

Why is it bad?

It is infuriating to feel like you made a safe and better choice for you and your family, only to find out that you have been duped. Feeling like the marketing of a product was intentionally created to convince you it is safe, when that is not the case. It is plain unfair to people who are making an effort. This also effects businesses who truly make good quality products. Having huge price gaps on 'similar' products, makes the consumer more likely to choose the more economical product. NOW is the time to stop supporting companies who are creating toxic products. Our power as an individual comes from where we choose to spend our money. Choose wisely!

Reasons Why

Tide, bleach, comet, lysol, 409, clorox, aveeno, palmolive, cascade, ect. These products are chemicals, and should not be inhaled or ingested. The problem with cleaning with them, is that the cleaner isn't always cleaned off entirely. So your dishes cleaned with dish washer detergent are small doses of cascade, or your floor cleaner or clothes cleaner. Which may not seem like a big deal (it is a BIG deal), long term exposure to inhaled chemicals according to a Norwegian study, is similar to smoking 20 cigarettes daily. Our daily routine is poisoning us. Make better choices, which can be difficult especially with greenwashing. Products that look natural, or maybe once were natural are deceiving us into thinking they are healthy. Pay attention to ingredients and warning labels!

Avoiding Greenwashing

  1. Read ingredients! Look extra diligently at the packaging of natural, green, sustainable products. Look for excess verbiage or "green" packaging as a red flag. It is likely you are being greenwashed!
  2. You can not even trust labels, there are so many types - green, natural, non-GMO, Fair Trade, 100% Organic, etc. Looking into the company is your best bet. Finding out where ingredients are sourced and where product is produced is essential.
  3. Research! There is so much information out there. Take the time to do a few google searched and reach out to people you know who are also making more conscious choices.
  4. Buy Used! Thrifting is an important way to be more sustainable and truly green :)
